RWA Solar Solutions realizes a pioneering project

In Bodensdorf near Wieselburg, RWA Solar Solutions successfully implemented Austria’s first grid-connected agri-photovoltaic system for use over berry crops. This groundbreaking project combines the cultivation of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries with the sustainable generation of solar power on an area of approximately 17,000 m² – demonstrating how modern agriculture and the energy transition can go hand in hand.

The system is equipped with 4,764 high-mounted modules facing southwest and has a capacity of 1.9 MWp. The projected annual yield is approximately 1.7 million kilowatt hours, equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 570 households.

Thanks to a clearance height of three meters, agricultural use remains unrestricted. Pile-bearing profiles were used for the foundation, eliminating the need for soil sealing. Adequate module spacing also ensures natural infiltration of rainwater.

Special translucent agri-PV modules are used, which not only generate electricity but also create optimal lighting conditions for plant growth. At the same time, they provide protection against extreme weather events such as hail, heavy rain, or strong sunlight, improving working conditions in the fields.

“The path to the agricultural future leads through agri-photovoltaics. By using land for dual use, we create added value for agriculture and energy supply. The plant in Bodensdorf is a flagship project with exemplary character,” says Christoph Metzker, CEO of RWA.

Together with the agricultural partner, the Genuss- und Erlebnishof Wurzer, a concept was developed that goes beyond pure electricity production: an agri-PV center for practical applications, research, and exchange is being built on site. Plans include guided tours, information sessions, and additional experimental facilities – for example, for cultivating tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers under PV modules.

With the project in Bodensdorf, RWA Solar Solutions once again underscores its commitment to implementing innovative energy solutions for agriculture – ecologically sound, economically viable, and future-oriented.
